Chocomel Large Carton 1000ml
Description
A huge favourite in the Netherlands, Chocomel is a chocolate flavoured milk produced by Campina in Holland. Also popular across Germany and Belgium too, this chocolate heaven is, as the slogan suggests, “The one and only”.
Chocolate milk itself dates all the way back to 250bc where it was recorded as being made by the Mayans who made cocoa, water and chili into a paste before allowing it to set into a milk-like substance.
Named Xocoatl, it was believed to have an invigorating effect and was seen as a drink of the goddesses. It was known to be used as currency when bartering occurred between the Aztecs.
It was 1700 when Spanish monks discovered that cocoa could be mixed with milk, sugar or cinnamon and also discovered that it’s tasty when drunk hot!
It was then a wait of 128 years until a Dutch trader – Van Houten – discovered how to make cocoa into a powder to be transported and of course make it easier to make into a delicious drink.
Chocomel eventually came into existence originally as Melcola in 1932, but due to the name already being taken the name was changed to Chocomel in 1936. The name was bought from another company for 50 Guilders (old Dutch currency) and the delicious Dutch chocolate milk was born.
Chocomel made a surprise appearance as a summer favourite in the Arab world when it was put into cans and served cold back in 1981, and has been enjoyed as a cold summer drink across the world ever since.
