It often seems that even five years ago barely anybody in the Uk had heard of these American classics but that, in recent years, the popularity of the iconic biscuits has exploded.
Even Cadburys now offer their famous Dairy Milk infused with the cookie goodness, which tells you everything you need to know, with Dairy Milk being the UK’s most popular chocolate bar.
Originally developed in Manhattan in 1912 by the National Biscuit Company (Now known as the impossibly less romantic Nabisco), the block on 9th Avenue where the original factory was is now known as Oreo way.
The icon of American confectionary wasn’t an original design, however, and was actually an imitation of the Hydrox cookie which was manufactured by The Sunshine Company, originally sold in 1908.
The first Oreo was sold on March 6th, 1912 to a shop owner in New Jersey, and even changed its name in 1921 to The Oreo Sandwich, before The Oreo Creme Sandwich, and then Oreo Chocolate Sandwich Cookie, which it remains to this day as a firm American favourite.
More than 40 billion cookies are produced per year – The 40 billion Oreos produced each year would circle the Earth five times if stacked one on top of another.
