American’s love their candy. That much, you would think, would be obvious to most considering the variety on the market and the amount that American’s buy and enjoy. That love appears to be making it’s away across The Atlantic as British tastes start to mirror our friends.
Brits searching for American candies online has surged in the past few years, with interest soaring as they become more available and Americanised holidays such as Halloween become mainstream across the UK.
Americans tend to dish out tonnes of candy at Halloween and that gives us a good idea of their favourite candies to hand out, but also for their own enjoyment.
American Candy
America is by far the biggest candy market in the world, and there are some astonishing facts about just how much American’s love their candy. As an example, as of 2017, Americans spent a staggering $8 billion per year on candy and chocolate.
American has roughly 1,200 manufacturing plants across the country which make candies and chocolates, as well as employing a massive 34,000 people.
M&M’s and Mars bars are the number 1 and 2 best selling candies in America, both produced by Mars Inc. and are part of the statistic that one in four Americans eat at least a piece of candy every single day.
American candy is a proud tradition, with over 65% of candy producers in the US being over 50 years old.
America’s favourite candy
According to data collated by The Daily Meal last year, America’s favourite Halloween candy is the humble bag of Skittles. Crunchy with a soft fruity centre, these American favourites are also loved by Brits alike for their simple but extremely popular texture and flavour.
In second place are the chocolate equivalent to the famous Skittles, with Americans dishing out M&M’s as their second favourite candies. Snickers came in at third, with Reese’s Cups coming in at third, showing a lot of love for American chocolate varieties.
Starburst came in at number five, with the chewy fruity candy that used to be called Opal Fruits lasting the distance with American candy lovers, after being launched in Britain. The remaining top candies from the list were.
