The UK’s Favourite Candies

You’ve probably seen the memes doing the rounds recently, causing outrage and arguments between friends and family. It usually involves the classic system of god tier, good tier, bad tier, and throw it in the bin tier. We haven’t seen a definitive candy ranking yet, but new research has revealed that American entries such as candy canes have arrived into the UK’s favourites.

Whatever the eventual rankings or tables for people’s favourites, it’s almost guarantee to get blood pressure rising and voices raised. With Britain now buying more American candies than ever before, it’s not surprising to see American favourites making their way into our shopping baskets.

American Candies

Not dissimilar to British tastes, The Daily Meal found that America’s favourite Halloween candies were Skittles, followed by M & M’s, Snickers and Reese’s Cups.

Whilst American’s tend to prefer crunchier candies, the UK apparently prefers softer chewier versions, with our friend’s across the pond also liking chocolate and boiled sweets.

Old traditional favourites in America tend to move in and out of popular choices, finding themselves flexible in a fickle public’s mind, in comparison to the UK where old candy habits tend to die hard.

UK Candy

Channel 5 ran a study for their show ‘Britain’s favourite sweets’ in an attempt to settle the debate of where our favourites deserve to be ranked – god tier or in the bin.

The show surveyed thousands of Brits to ask them which their favourites were and which turn them right off, and some of the results were surprising.

At number one was the classic Haribo Starmix, followed by the classic Chocolate Eclairs (Not the cakes, the chewy toffee sweets).

Following up after Haribo and the Eclairs were more Americanised varieties of sweets, with Starburst, Jelly Beans and Rhubarb and Custard ranking highly along with Candy Canes.

When asked more specifically about their sweet preferences, Brits said they loved Juicy Strawberries, Milk Chocolate Mini Eggs, Jelly Beans, Fizzy Bubble-gum Bottles, Milk Chocolate Raisins, Vanilla Fudge, Cola Bottle, Red Strawberry Metre, Fizzy Cherry Bottle, and Giant Snowies all in that order.

Separately, they said that their favourite chocolate was Cadbury’s Dairy Milk, followed by Snickers and Bounty.

The results show how closely Brits are beginning to align with American tastes when it comes to our favourite sweet treats.
